About the Teenage Cancer Trust

Every day in the UK, up to 6 teenagers or young adults (between the ages of 13 and 24) will find out they have cancer - that is approximately 2,100 new cases a year. These young people, in the midst of their already difficult journey to adulthood, suddenly find themselves faced with a possible life-threatening illness and very often receiving treatment in inappropriate facilities with inadequate support options. Until the age of 16 a teenager is likely to be treated in a paediatric ward alongside toddlers. If the same teen was diagnosed after turning 16 then they are likely to end up in an adult ward with elderly patients.

Teenage Cancer Trust's top priority is building units in NHS hospitals specifically for teenagers with cancer. As well as superior medical facilities, these units are equipped with day rooms, kitchens and chill-out rooms where teenagers can relax and feel at home or have friends and family to visit in a comfortable environment. There are computers with internet access, pool tables, playstations, satellite TV, musical instruments, and other things teenagers might like to occupy their time with, or share with friends. Most importantly, the units provide an environment where teenagers can meet others in a similar situation and allow patients to build friendships and mechanisms to cope with their disease.

Online Trolley Dash

Celebrities from Big Brother and Shipwrecked joined with comedians and the public on 30th October in a world-first – an online trolley dash celebrating the launch of the new look mandmdirect.com website and raising more than £6,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust

Taking place at fabulous private members’ club in London, the celebrity line up included Big Brother twins Sam and Amanda Marchant; Big Brother 9 winner Rachel Rice and housemate Kat Kasisopa; Colleen's Real Women winner Sasha Parker: Goks' Miss Naked Beauty contestant Joanna Russell; Shipwrecked’s Marvyn Williams; and comedians Gordon Southern and Adam Bloom. The premise was simple – to load as many products as they could in one minute: the online shopping basket with the highest value contents was the winner!

Taking a break from recent catwalk shows and life after Big Brother, Sam and Amanda were delighted to take part in the action and raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust. Says Sam: “It was so well organised and really exciting! Well done to mandmdirect.com for helping raise awareness and funds for Teenage Cancer Trust in a fun way. We were amazed how much money was raised!”

Kate Newton of New Elton entered the competition to win not only a cash prize, but also the coveted title of mandmdirect.com Online Trolley Dash Winner 2008!

M and M Direct employees involvement

Mazda London Triathlon John O'Groats to Lands End

Raising money for TCT is something that is not only important to M and M Direct as a corporate sponsor but is important in the hearts of the employees too. Back in August three employees; Vicky Morgan, Caroline Knox and Anna Roby-Welford took part in what is the largest triathlon in the world, the Mazda London Triathlon 2008. The event attracted over 12,000 entrants, all in aid of raising money for TCT.

On Saturday 22nd June 2008, M and M Direct employee, Iain Hutchinson set off with 2 friends to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise funds for TCT. ‘It wasn’t the most auspicious of beginnings’ recalls Iain. ‘On the first day my friend came to grief in a ditch and ended up in hospital!’ Fortunately there were no serious injuries and the trio continued without further mishap, covering around 90 miles a day.

Wind and rain appear to have been the constant theme of the trip and although the intention was to camp under the stars each night, for the most part the weather prevented them from pitching their tents. ‘We were very prepared to rough-it, but it was nice to have the luxury of a hot shower in a B&B!’ Iain admitted. Asked if he would do it again, Iain said definitely – he already has plans to travel in the opposite direction next year!

The grand total raised all in aid of TCT was £746!
